Vaping: Where to Start
When you're switching to vaping, it's easy to feel completely overwhelmed and even intimidated by all the mods, accessories, and flavors you encounter online.
Don't worry -- getting starting is simple.
First of all, be honest with yourself about how many cigarettes you're currently smoking. Remember, even the occasional cigarette still has serious health consequences.
So, even if you only consider yourself to be a "social smoker," you might be surprised by how much harder it is to quit than you originally thought. Generally, if you smoke roughly 10 cigarettes a day, you're considered to be a "medium" smoker -- any fewer than 10 and you're a light smoker.
If you smoke at least a pack a day, you're a heavy smoker.
Why does how much you smoke matter -- especially now that you've committed to quitting?
Because the level of nicotine that your body is used to getting on a regular/daily basis determines the nicotine content that you'll need to look for in your e-juice flavor.
Usually, nicotine levels in vape juice fall within the range of 0mg/mL (your ultimate goal) and go all the way up to 36mg/mL.
Other levels include 3mg/mL, 6mg/mL, 12mg/mL, and 18mg/mL. You really only need to go above 18mg/mL if you smoke more than a pack of unfiltered cigarettes per day.
Most people find that starting with 18mg/mL, and vaping as often as they'd smoke throughout the day, is a good place to start.
So, let's say you've decided to start with an e-juice that has an 18mg/mL nicotine content.
You should start by, as we briefly mentioned above, vaping as often as you would smoke cigarettes throughout the day. When you're first making the switch, don't worry so much about whether or not you're vaping "too much" to be able to successfully get off nicotine.
Instead, just focus on getting used to the experience of vaping. Try to make it as similar to your smoking experience as is possible. Sit in the same place, go out with your friends when they smoke and vape instead, or hit your vape first thing in the morning as you normally would.
The more you can mimic your cigarette routine, the more likely you'll be to stick to vaping.
So, how often should you lower your nicotine level?
For light to medium smokers, taking things down one level of nicotine content about once every two weeks does the trick. For heavier smokers, a level down every three weeks works well.
Finally, let's also quickly talk about e-juice flavors.
When you're first getting started, the best option to go with is either a traditional tobacco or menthol flavor. Familiar flavors make it much easier for you to stick to your guns about leaving the cigarettes alone.
You can always switch it up later.
Choosing the Right Vaping Device
When you're switching from smoking to vaping, it's important that you choose the vaping device that works for you -- and one that's realistic.
Especially if smoking is a well-established part of your daily routine, your best bet will probably be to try out a cig-a-like or an e-cig. These are long, thin vape pens that closely mimic the look of a cigarette, so the change won't feel quite so drastic.
You can also pick up a vape starter kit, which contains everything you need to begin vaping.
Though it can definitely be tempting to buy one of the awesome, complicated-looking box mods you see when you're shopping for vape devices online, as a beginner, it's best to go with one of the above two options.
Plus, knowing that you need to "work up to" a more serious mod is a great incentive to keep you going.
How to Vape Properly
The great thing about vape pens -- especially cig-a-likes -- is that they're incredibly easy to use.
If you've gone with a disposable vape pen option (something we definitely recommend to beginners) you won't even have to worry about recharging your device.
First, look to see if your device has a power button. If so, press it and then pull in (take a deep breath in) once the power button has stopped blinking. You can repeat as many times as you'd like to. If you'd like, you can take a lung hit in the same way in which you'd smoke a cigarette.
Turn off the power button when you're done.
Not all vape pens have a power button, however.
If your device doesn't have a button, all you need to do is inhale quickly (don't take deep breaths) about three times to get your device warmed up and ready to go.
Then, you'll vape normally, and the device will turn off on its own.
What to Do If You're Struggling
Especially if you've been a heavy smoker for many years, it makes total sense that fully committing to switching from smoking to vaping won't always be easy.
You may find that, even though you enjoy vaping and do find that it curbs most of your cravings, you just can't seem to stop thinking about how much you miss cigarettes.
So, what can you do to ward off temptation?
First of all, once you've gotten comfortable with tobacco-flavored e-juice, consider trying unexpected, out-of-the-box flavors. You can still find tons of flavors with the nicotine level you currently need, but the thrill of experimenting with different tastes can help you to feel much more enthusiastic about vaping.
You can also try switching up your vaping device, especially once you've fully gotten the hang of cig-a-likes/e-cigarettes. Why not try a box mod, get into sub-ohm vaping, or even invest in a sleek, top-of-the-line vaping device to ensure that you actually use it?
Above all, know that you can and should seek support -- especially within the vaping community.
Remember that many people start vaping to help them quit smoking, so lots of people in the vaping world have been in your shoes. Look at online vaping communities, hang out at your local vape shop, and even hit up local vape clubs and events to connect with other people who get what you're going through.
If you just can't seem to commit to vaping alone, consider becoming what's called a "dual user." This is someone that still primarily vapes but reaches for a standard tobacco cigarette about once a day. The goal here is for you to "taper off" your cigarette addiction over time, switching gradually to vaping entirely.
