Taste the Juice: How to Choose the Perfect Vape Flavor

Taste the Juice: How to Choose the Perfect Vape Flavor

More than half of American adults have tried vaping or used e-cigs last year. Globally, e-cigarette sales increased from $1.5 billion in 2014 to $3.6 billion in 2018.

These findings show that vaping is more popular than ever before — all you need to do is to pick a vape flavor that suits your taste.

The number of vapers is estimated to reach a whopping 55 million by 2021. Therefore, it's not surprising that manufacturers offer thousands of e-juice flavors, from vanilla and tobacco to candy, coffee, and banana nut bread. The variety of flavors and brands is simply incredible.

Whether you're a vaper or running your own vape business, you have endless options when it comes to vape flavoring.

But which one is right for you — or your customers? And what's the difference between flavors - is it all about their taste and aroma?

Not really. While the flavor itself is important, it's not the only factor that matters. You also want to choose the right juice so you can get the best flavor.

Need help? That's why we're here. Read on to find out everything you need to know about choosing a vape flavor that suits your preferences!

Understand Your Options: Types of Vape Flavors

A cool thing about vape flavors is that they're almost endlessly customizable. In fact, more than 7,764 unique flavors were available on the market back in 2014 — and their number has increased since then. It's no wonder why e-cigs have millions of fans worldwide.

Vape flavorings range from classic options like strawberry and peppermint to out-of-the-box choices you've never heard of. Depending on your preferences, you may opt for:

  • Tobacco-flavored e-juice
  • Fruit-flavored juice
  • Dessert-flavored juice
  • Candy-flavored juice
  • Menthol-flavored juice
  • Drink-flavored juice

These can be further broken down into several categories based on their VG to PG ratio, nicotine content, and other factors.

Let's say you have a sweet tooth and want to pamper yourself after a long day. Why eat a slice of cake, which is packed with sugar and calories, when you can vape instead?

Chocolate cake, apple pie, cookies and cream, and lemon tart e-juice flavors are calorie-free and taste amazing.

Perhaps you're craving a real cigarette — and that's perfectly normal, especially if you're trying to quit smoking. With the wide range of tobacco flavors available, kicking this habit is easy. For example, you can try a mild tobacco e-juice with a hint of cinnamon or honey.

Another great thing about vape flavorings is that you can combine them and create your own mix. Rum and tobacco, for instance, is a perfect match. Try these combos too:

  • Menthol and coffee
  • Menthol and green apple
  • Vanilla and coffee
  • Green tea and raspberry
  • Lime, vanilla, and caramel
  • Fruit and tobacco flavors

Vanilla-flavored juice, for example, goes well with most flavorings, from tobacco to cherry and lime. Green tea vape juice concentrate can be mixed with fruity flavors like mango, peach, strawberry, and blueberry.

Mixing vape flavoring is pretty much like cooking. Take the time to experiment and discover new combos that will delight your senses.

Strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate yield an amazing flavor when combined together. Peppermint is a perfect addition to lemon-, grapefruit-, and chocolate-flavored e-juice. For a nutty flavor, mix cinnamon, caramel, and pecan.

Craving Nutella? Mix hazelnut- and chocolate-flavored juices. The end result is out of this world — and has zero calories.

VG and PG: What You Need to Know

As mentioned earlier, the e-juice flavor is just one part of the story. Its quality depends on a variety of factors, including the PG/VG ratio.

Propylene glycol (PG) is an organic alcohol used in thousands of goods, from cosmetics to fragrances and medications. It's also added to lots of different foods and beverages, such as ice cream and caffeinated drinks. This compound is considered safe and has very low toxicity.

Contrary to what you may have heard, PG isn't dangerous. In fact, this substance has been approved as a food additive by the FDA.

To date, there has been only one documented case of PG poisoning, but it had nothing to do with vaping.

A young man ended up in the ER after drinking large amounts of cinnamon-flavored whiskey. Propylene glycol concentrations in his bloodstream were around 178 micrograms per milliliter. His symptoms were attributed to the combination of PG and ethanol, the active compound in alcohol.

Vegetable glycerin (VG), another key compound in vape flavorings, is safe too.

This colorless, odorless substance produces that thick vapor you love so much. Also known as glycerol, it's derived from plant- and animal-based sources. It has a wide range of uses in the food, medical, pharmaceutical, and beauty industries.

Choose the Right VG/PG Ratio

Some types of juice are higher in PG, while others use vegetable glycerin as a base. Both options have pros and cons.

High-VG e-liquids are thicker and produce more vapor than high-PG juice.

The downside is that they clog up coils quickly and can significantly reduce the life of atomizers. In rare cases, they may cause mild adverse effects, such as increased thirst and dry mouth.

High-PG juices have a thinner consistency, so they won't clog your coils within days as high-VG liquids do. Furthermore, they deliver a stronger throat hit and a more intense flavor. To avoid dry hits, stick to the voltage limits of your atomizer.

Beware, though, that PG-based e-liquids are more likely to trigger allergic reactions than those high in VG.

Vapers can opt for e-liquids containing a mix of VG and PG, such as 50/50, 60/40, or 70:30. Some e-juices are 100 percent VG- or PG-based.

Choosing one over the other comes down to your preferences. High-VG e-juice, for example, is ideal for cloud-chasing. High-VG juice, on the other hand, is a better choice for when you're vaping in public places as it produces less vapor.

Consider your vaping gear too. Sub-ohm tanks work best with e-liquids high in VG. E-juices with a 50/50 ratio are ideal for clearomizers.

There are no set rules on choosing a VG/PG ratio. The only way to find your sweet spot is to experiment.

If you're not ready to make your own e-juice, opt for a vape flavor concentrate. These products are typically higher in propylene glycol, which is why they deliver such an intense flavor. Ideally, start with a 50/50 ratio and take it from there.

In general, dessert-flavored e-liquids are high in VG — hence their thick consistency and rich aroma. Tobacco-based flavors and peppermint flavorings, by contrast, tend to be higher in propylene glycol.

Does Nicotine Strength Affect Vape Flavor?

When choosing a vape flavor, it's important to consider the nicotine concentration in e-juice.

This compound has a slightly bitter or peppery taste, which is more or less noticeable, depending on the VG/PG ratio and vape flavorings.

For example, high-PG juice gives you more flavor, so you won't really feel the taste of nicotine. However, nicotine concentrations higher than 3 milligrams per milliliter typically affect the flavor.

The taste of nicotine is similar to that of black pepper. Some brands may contain impurities, which alter their flavor and may affect your vaping experience. Myosine, beta-nicotyrine, and anatabine are just a few examples.

Low-purity nicotine often has a harsh flavor that you can feel in your throat. That's why it's recommended to research the different brands available and choose one that has been tested for purity and quality.

The higher the nicotine content, the more it affects the flavor. Another aspect to consider is oxidation. This process occurs naturally during steeping.

Most DIY juices require steeping for 48 hours to two weeks or more. Nicotine speeds up oxidation during steeping, which enhances the flavor. Therefore, shorter steeping times will result in a less intense flavor, regardless of whether or not you add nicotine.

This relationship goes both ways, according to a recent study. As it turns out, vape flavorings may influence the nicotine absorption rate — possibly through their PH effects.

Another study indicates that sweet e-juice flavorings that produce a stronger throat hit are perceived as more appealing. E-liquids containing nicotine produce a stronger throat hit. But nicotine levels in e-liquid are typically too low to increase its appeal, as the researchers point out.

These findings indicate that flavorings have a greater impact on your vaping experience than nicotine concentrations.

However, juices that contain 24 or 36 milligrams of nicotine will likely affect the flavor. This will result in a strong throat hit, which you may or may not enjoy.

Remember, you can always opt for nicotine-free e-juice or nicotine salts. The latter have little or no flavor, so they won't affect your vaping experience.

Is Vaping Safe?

Unless you live on a deserted island, you've probably heard about the mysterious vaping-linked deaths and lung diseases. According to the Washington Post, there have been at least 18 deaths and 1,000 lung injuries related to e-cigs.

These numbers, though, don't tell the whole story. The death and lung injuries that occurred this year are due to the use of counterfeit vape cartridges.

Some e-liquids are contaminated with pesticides or heavy metals. Others contain THC, the psychoactive compound in weed.

Quality vape flavorings contain none of these substances.

In fact, the New York State Appellate court delayed the decision on e-cig bans. Current evidence confirms that vaping doesn't affect lung function, heart rate, or blood pressure.

Choosing the Best Vape Flavor Is Fun

As you see, there's a lot that goes into choosing the perfect vape flavor. With so many options available, it's impossible not to find one that suits your preferences.

Use a vape flavor concentrate, steep your own juice, or add e-juice flavor extracts to your e-liquid. Experiment with different nicotine strengths and VG/PG ratios. Try several e-juice brands and pick a new flavor every time.
